Michl Herberstein studied at the University for Applied Arts of Vienna (“Die Angewandte”) before opening his studio in the Weinviertel area of North East Austria. There he draws, paints, and creates his amazing wood and nail sculptures.
Of these, Michl says how much he loves uniting the smooth organic warmth of wood and the cold, stiff, man-made sharpness of the nails.
The nails create a new surface, spiky and metallic, but also smooth, dressing the wood with a second skin, an armour.
Michl uses driftwood or discarded wood, each with its own unique shape, which he will carefully cover with nails.
Growing up in the countryside, these two contrasting materials have been part of his life since childhood.
Michl’s work is exhibited in many Austrian art galleries, from Vienna to Linz.
