Newsletter September 2019

Dear friends and supporters,

September is back!

Here is a little update… because

 WE NEED TO ACT

The Olive Grove

Over the summer the situation on the Greek Islands has been worsening. People are arriving in dinghies every day. Just the second week of September on Lesvos alone, 26 boats arrived 914 refugees. And this is an ‘ordinary’ week, the previous week, again on Lesvos alone, 1258 people had arrived. To give you an idea there are now 10 400 people in Moria camp, a camp that should welcome no more than 3000 people, the camp on Samos is eight ties above capacity (over 4900 people for a capacity of 648) and the camp on Chios, ready to receive 1000 persons, is home for 3200.

Men, women and children have nothing, new arrivants sleep on the bare ground, between alleys of tents and containers, or in the olive grove nearby (which 3420 people now call home) with no sleeping bags, no mats, no tents. And the weather will soon turn…Three Peas will organise a South West London collection this autumn, date tbc, and while we organise that, we wanted to ask you to check your cupboards and wardrobes and hold on to any good quality :-winter clothes -winter shoes (no heels)-tents -sleeping bags-mats (yes, yoga mats too!) -baby beds/prams

In the meantime, we are also sending emergency funds to Attika (with whom we work closely and are in touch with on a daily basis) for them to locally buy tents and blankets.  If you can make a donation to help us towards this special fund please do so HERE   If you know someone who works for a hygiene product company (shampoo, pads, nappies, soap etc) or indeed tent, bags, outdoors etc please ask them if their company could give end-of-line products or seconds, or put us in touch!   threepeasinapot@outlook.com
