Midsummer and halfway through the year is a good moment to pause and take stock.
💚 Four months into the war in Ukraine, over seven million people have crossed the border to neighbouring countries, and eight million are believed to be displaced within Ukraine.*
In the first few weeks of the war, we supported long-term partners who travelled to the border, helped finance a transit operation taking refugees from the border to friends, families and safe places in neighbouring countries, the creation of a refuge at the Romanian border and the deliveries of prams and baby food packs.
We now have longer-term projects in Czech Republic, where many Ukrainian refugees have found shelter. Through the Caritas centre in Prague and a community centre in Nové Hrady we sponsor food, fuel and a psychologist, along with educational summer camps, to help Ukrainian children to prepare for the coming school year. With art and craft workshops and sport activities, as well as tuition, the centres hope to fill the gap in the children’s education and help them acquire language fluency. As well as covering the cost of the teachers running those camps, we will also finance the children’s lunches.

💚 Though we are researching and funding projects in support of Ukrainian refugees, we will not shift our focus away from Greece. The war in Ukraine greatly impacts other refugees and NGOs there. The increase of fuel prices eats into the budgets of NGOs, and that of food (wheat and oil, principally) affects the size of food packs distributed. And most importantly, with the situation in Greece out of the headlines, donations are dwindling fast.
Over the last few weeks, the refugee population on the islands is increasing again. We are in close contact with our partners on the ground, staying informed of the challenges they face and increasing our support where possible. Here are the different projects we support, and here’s how you can help us help Greece!
